All those men you see around Stockholm pushing strollers are not, as I once mistakenly thought, mannies. They are dads on paternity leave, and there’s even a magazine, Pappa, aimed at the demographic. Besides having arguably the best parental leave in the universe (16 months paid), Sweden’s good-looking royal family is in the midst of a baby boom. Princess Madeleine, based in London, is mother to Leonore (1) and Nicolas (7 months), and newlywed Princess Sofia is expecting her first child in April, just a month after Crown Princess Victoria, mother to Estelle (3), is expecting her second.
All of this baby news got us thinking of Swedish designer kids' gear—beyond the well-known and well-loved BabyBjörn carriers and pint-size Fjällräven backpacks. With the help of some cool Stockholm moms, we put together a guide to need-to-know Swedish brands for everything from silver spoons to hobbyhorses.
